[edit]Synopsis

IS follows the high school life of Hoshino Haru. Haru was born intersex meaning that he was born with physical characteristics of both sexes and cannot clearly be assigned as a binary gender based on these physical characteristics. Registered as female at birth but later raised as a boy (gender) since he always played with boys his age during the earlier years of school. Haru is forced to attend high school as a girl because of this.

At first the story seemed interesting and unique, but as time passed the plot became weaker and weaker. It was definitely over-dramatic for my taste.
I like heavy themes and different situations, but this drama was mediocre in my opinion. The plot was predictable, the acting was average, and the characters were not believable. The last two episodes tried to operate with character-development, but that was too late. The only reason I could watch it till the end was Haru, for she was well portrayed. Other than her I was extremely irritated by Miwa-chan and her mother. I can't think of any other characters in dramas that had the same effect on me (that is shouting out loud whenever they did something stupid; and trust me,

I watched this drama because it has Fukuda Saki in it, one of my favorite actresses in Japan.

An interesting drama that looks at intersexuals in Japan. In that sense, this drama is quite informative as it teaches the viewers about IS and it allows viewers to see life through their eyes.

The storyline regarding the other IS girl was a bit exaggerated for me, with her mother acting all oppressive and psychotic and the resolution was a bit of a letdown.

I would have liked more interactions between Haru and her senpai. But Haru's family was quite lovely and heartwarming.

A good drama that is socially relevant and interesting.

  • Both are dramas about REAL life issues. And in IS Haru is very similar character to Last Friend's Ruka.

  • Both of them emphasize not ordinary but "rare" things in life -one would think-, how family members can be against this extra-ordinariness initially and then understand more about life together with the viewer.
