This is the story of two women, Seo Jung Eun and Han Yoo Kyung, who walk very different paths to achieve their desires. Seo Jung Eun is a strong and courageous woman who has suffered a difficult life, having grown up in an orphanage, but continues to embrace people around her despite longing for affection herself. Jung Eun harbours the hope that she will meet her mother if she becomes a star, striving to reach her goal and overcome her suffering with her pure and innocent nature. In contrast, Han Yoo Kyung has a birth secret for which she is willing to throw away everything in order to get revenge. The "thorn birds" of the title refers to Jung Eun's character, who only brings out her best at the cost of great pain. A thorn bird is a mythical bird who searches for a thorn tree from the day it is born. When it finds it, the bird impales itself upon the sharpest thorn, and rises above the agony to sing the most beautiful song ever heard.

Story: Has a dark undertone to it due to the themes that the writers brought to the forth front: obsession, jealousy, birth secrets, lies. The writers did an amazing job keeping me guessing with the romance and just keeping me glued to the screen (most melos become repetitive after a while). What I loved most about it though was the hopeful/happy ending(you dont get those too often in melos).
Actors/Cast: I didnt know any of the leads but i was quite impressed with the casting choices after watching a few episodes. Han Hye Jin has amazing dramatic chops and i loved her chemistry not only with Joo Sang Wook
but also her frenemy Kim Min Jung. I'll be honest, when i first saw KMJ on screen I got taken a back by her looks and not in a good way. I was so shocked that they would choose an actress that was not as pretty as the other main lead because it was hard to believe the main male character would choose her and become obsessed over her at first as he did. But when the time jump happens she is given a total makeoever and her amazing acting skills begin to shine. I really think both lead actresses did an equally tremendous job. I didnt like the second male lead characer, the acting was bad and his character really wasnt needed. Loved the rest of the supporting characters.
Music: Dark and moody to fit the atmosphere.
Rewatch- I will definitely watch it again because it had excellent pacing and i enjoyed it so much the first time but not for a bit because its so twisted.
Overall Thorn Birds is a different kind of melodrama but very enjoyable if you like gritty stories.

This drama had a well-paced storyline, and kept you wondering what would happen to the characters in the end. It was more of a character-developing drama that did a great job in showing the underlying emotions and reasons for each of the leads actions. This could have easily been a 12 ep. drama, instead of dragging it out to 20 episodes.

I had a difficult time feeling any chemistry between the 2 main leads, and it didn't seem their romance was developed realistically or steadily throughout the story. The little girl was cute though.
Both main leads were flat/boring and lacked a bit of character or personality.
The female antagonist got very annoying and her antics took up a lot of the drama. The people who
catered to her as well, you just wanted to shake them with frustration - but not necessarily in a good way!
Overall, not a bad drama for a filler, but not something one could marathon.

Both dramas focus more on the female leads and thier negative frenemy relationship. There is one "goody toe shoes" type character and one "evil" character. Both dramas also give off a darker melodrama feel.
There's a similar revenge mood, a woman that'll do anything for power and an other that's looking for love and affection...
