Su Mi and Su Yeon return home after an extended illness and hospital stay. Things have not been the same since their mother passed away. Their return is welcomed by Eun Joo, their stepmother. It's evident that Su Mi, the older and stronger of the two, isn't afraid to speak her mind when it comes to their family troubles. Su Yeon is more timid and wary of their stepmother and looks to Su-mi for help. Continually picked on and harassed by their stepmother, the two have no choice but to endure the relationship for their father's sake. Su Mi promises Su Yeon that she will never let their stepmother beat them again. Unexplainable things start to occur at the house. Something has changed, no one knows what it is, but the sisters can feel it. On their first night back, Su Yeon hears someone running up the stairs, opening her door, and walking up to her bed. As soon as she pulls the covers over her head, they are pulled right off, yet no one is around. Could it be their stepmother trying to torment them? Or could it be that there's something more sinister at work, a supernatural force in the houses that wants to drive everyone away?

This is one of my favorite movies. I watched it expecting just another scary ghost story, but it turned out to be much more original than that. This story unfolds so well that I immediately wanted to rewatch it, and catch all the things I missed the first time. I will admit that the story can be a little confusing at times, and some scenes are very abstract/surreal, but by the end it all comes together brilliantly.

Im Soo Jung is really great as Su mi, and I loved the tension between her and Yeom Jeong-ah, and her sweet relationship with Moon Geun Young.

    The cinematography is absolutely beautiful.

The music by Lee Byung Woo has become of one of my all time favorite musical pieces

This movie is exceptional in part by its history and another by its cast.

The mystery is here until the end and leave a print in doubt even after completion.

The atmosphere created by the decor is impressive, stressful and disturbing, as well as the soundtrack that fits perfectly with the situations.

The acting is particularly striking, especially stepmother's one.

    Emotions, thrills and bursts guaranteed.

  • Both films focus on a young girl/woman who were absent when a friend/loved one needs them most, then are consumed by guilt which, along with problems within the family, drives the events of each film.

I regret that I'd unintentionally seen the American remake before this one. :(

The younger sister was dead the entire movie. What you see between the stepmom and older sister are flashbacks of what she remembers. The stepmom has to live with knowing she could have prevented the younger sisters death and the fact that the older one blames her for it.

The American version is done slightly different but the overall theme is the same. Instead of forcing herself to keep remembering what happened, which is partially an effect of her actions, she puts up a wall to forget. I will say the American version is easier to understand but the Korean version is better.

a clever film, that actually makes you do a little thinking. it certainly needs to be watched in a more focused manner, especally if you come to the movie without being spoiled what it is actually about. If you know what the theme is before watching it, you know what to look out for Camerawork is actually quite useful in helping decipher some things. Def one of my favourite films.

Not a very big fan on scary movies but this one was more of a psychological horror movie and really liked it, MGY is really good at acting <3...though I am kinda confused on how, Soo Yon dies.

I watched the American version of this a few years ago before I discovered A-Movies, so I decided to watch this as my first Korean Horror as “what’s the harm I’ve seen this plot before so it can’t be that scary” ……. Wow I was wrong, this was soo much better than the American Version,
However if you are looking for a Jumpy/scary kind of horror then I would suggest not watching this as it’s more of a psychological horror.

i've watched almost all available horror movies that i know since this genre always interest me but often end up disappointed because of their brain dead cliche storyline and only focus on cheap scares or gores...but ATOTS has the most complex storyline in any horror that grace on my face with the highest replayability. The problem is....this was more of a family drama than a boo scare horror flick

I dont hate this but dont like it either. Im a fan of horror movies but this one let me down. I wont recommend it to someone who'd watched several top rated horror films. you'll just end up dissapointed and pissed like me.

Really like this movie, and it's also the first Korean media I ever watched. It is pretty confusing so I don't think it's that easy to appreciate the first time round. I think it's better to watch it, go read a summary and then watch it again. It's not really "scary" so much as psychological and very impactful.

I liked this. At first it's so confusing, just trying to get to know the characters and there relation, HeHe.I have seen this on a lot of "Korean scary movie" lists, and if your not into 'scary', don't worry! It's more psychological. It's interesting! <3
