I was so proud of our girl in this episode! I loved how she made a concerted effort to address her symptoms and make a change, even when it was hard. Actually, I think a lot of her success came from knowing her diagnosis. I can't say I don't understand why the doctors didn't tell her before, but I also don't think it was the right decision. I'm not sure what "common practice" is in psychiatry/psychology these days, but I think that deciding whether to inform a patient of their diagnosis depends on the patient's personality. For some, knowing exactly what you have can throw you into a spiral where you get bogged down and crushed by your list of symptoms, common prognoses, and salient stories of people with the same condition. However, for others, being able to put into words the nebulous and ominous symptoms you've experienced before can actually be freeing because you have a label and a list of symptoms to work off of plus a body of literature on how to treat it. Rather than just blundering through life without knowing when your symptoms will act up or how they'll manifest, you can pull from others' experiences and try to predict your own symptoms and come up with coping mechanisms. I think this was the case for Woo Joo, and I'm so proud of her for taking that step towards treating this super daunting condition rather than giving in to the overwhelming pessimism and sense of defeat that were hanging over her.
