The comedical aspects of BL's stuffs

Here i have to say i haven't read the manga so the review is completely based on what i watch in this dorama.

This one is super hilarious. The way the main character who labels himself as an extra with the mission of avoiding to fall in love with boys is extremely unique and fresh. His clumsy and hilarious attempts to avoid being matched with other boys never failed to make me laughing out loud. It is also refreshing to see his point of view's of BL stuffs. If you are really into to BL, you will find really relateable to all the things happened in this drama.

The acting is no doubt since almost all the cast came from Tokusatsu's alumni. The opening is catchy and freaking funny at the same time. I hope S2 would happen. Definitely worth watch for you who seek comedical dorama with the sprinkles of BL's thingy.

Comedy on point!

The opening song is such a delight. Very catchy and entertaining to watch. I'm hoping they make it available in Spotify soon. I saw some fans already doing the dance number in Tiktok.

They have so many pretty boys in this show. How can someone who enjoys BL not watch this? Mob's reactions are so funny. I love his chaotic energy. Despite having many "couples", they managed to give them short but sweet moments.

They joked about season 2 at the end. I hope it comes true. The director of this show is the same as Pornographer, which has 3 installments so maybe he can give us sequels.

A hilarious take on the world of bl and a man who tries to navigate it.

This drama is accurately called ❛Anti-BL❜. It centres around Mob or Mobu (literal meaning: extra character) who is painfully aware of the fact that he has been living in the world of bl comics.

❝I have noticed that I'm living in a comic. This is no ordinary comic.❞

I watched this drama mainly as a filler but I ended up loving it. I honestly expected loads of sarcasm but NO. The drama is from Mobu's point-of-view who lives in a world where every man seems to be secretly in relationship with another man and every bl trope ever is enrolling just round the corner.

Mobu isn't sarcastic or homophobic, he just wants to live easy but it's hard to do when some cosmic force constantly keeps trying to push him into situations which resemble bl plotlines. Mobu believes that he is an extra, a side character and he's happy to be in his role on the sidelines and watch all the foolishness enroll in front of him.

The best part about the plotline is how it hilariously pays homage to bl tropes.

❝If this is a world of bl then everything unnatural happening so far makes sense.❞

Mobu’s college is populated by an unusual number of handsome men who are all either about to or are already in relationships with other men through the power of tropes. For example, a delinquent guy bumps into someone on the street only to suddenly realise ‘oh he’s cute’ and falling in love on spot. A student slips, and is saved by the timely arrival of another guy miraculously caught with a timely arm around the waist by another guy.

Each time such events play out around him, Mobu surreptitiously makes himself scarce and commends himself for having dodged becoming a main character in a bl. Things seem to hit the roof when Mobu's own brother is confessed to by a school playboy with whom he's been friends for a long time.

Although Mobu believes that he is a side character and does his best to blend in, this is an ❛Absolute BL❜, meaning that Mobu has to fall in love too and ends up experiencing his biggest fear... becoming a main character in a bl. He is prey to the ultimate trope which he has been trying to dodge all along: that the guy who falls first is the one who's least expecting it.

And I loved the side couples too. They bring everything to the story despite the short screentime dedicated to each of them.

The twist at the end was pretty much anticipated and I really wish we could see Mobu falling in love too but alas, second season (hopefully?)

══ ∘◦❦◦∘ ═══════════

“Inukai Atsuhiro” is so delightfully expressive and is perfect for this comical role. We also got to see loads of other bl couples and actors from other japanese bl shows. And I cannot seem to get over that intro song! I may not be rewatching this any time soon (hence a rewatch value=5) but this is absolutely essential for a one-time watch~

Overall rating is 8.5/10 because this is an awesome show which impressed me :)

Awesome in the beginning but a let down in the end

I loved almost all of this, it was fun. I kept trying to guess who the ML would wind up with which kept it exciting. Until he found his match….and the romance was so boring. It was a real let down. There was nothing to convince that this man who spent the entire time of this drama avoiding a BL relationship just fell for a non fleshed out character. I was expecting something exciting that would pull him in considering how reluctant he was, but nothing was exciting. His brother had a better romance.

I didn't know what to expect when I watched this, I just thought the idea of man waking up and realising he is in a world of BL, with all it's tropes and cliches, was going to be funny.

I wasn't disappointed.

The opening titles in themselves are worth a watch. The disco-esque song with the retro costumes makes for a great bop.

There isn't really a lot to say about this series. I enjoyed the acting, the music was great, the sets were a little low-grade but believable and, whilst I've become a bit jaded about special effects, the ones in this series (animated roses blooming around character's face and head and the other character apparently being able to *see* them) make sense in the context of the story and aren't over-used.

The series is comprised of four episodes, which are themselves comprised of three smaller episodes. They're clearly titled you know where you are in the story and the pacing is fairly consistent.

The show ended on a sort-of cliffhanger, so I hope there's a second season, but all in all this was a funny, charming and interesting little series that will take you maybe a couple of hours to watch, so why not?

“I’m just a Mobu!”

We follow Mobu (meaning extra, referring to extras in a TV show) and his place in the world of BL. Everywhere he goes he is faced with boys love couples. Despite his indifference and drive to conquer BL, he knows everything to know about it. From reading tons of BL manga, spotting tropes, and even admiring handsome boys within imaginary flowers, he’s oblivious to how he’s become a walking irony. He thinks this is all to learn to protect himself from homosexuality but fails to recognize that he might actually be gay. His mentality is like “I’m not like other girls” but he ends up being “the other girls”. (Probably some internalized homophobia or maybe he’s just annoyed at happy couples LOL)

I really like the lead, he’s adorable and quirky. This drama is silly and pokes at how ridiculous BL can be, like watching BL relationships form within the first second of meeting. The main theme is super catchy and it reminds me of myself trying to deny my own sexuality “I’m just a Mobu!”. It’s just a super cute drama and I recommend to anyone who likes BL. Rooting for a season 2!!

Quirky and funny

(AKA: A Man Who Defies the World of BL Season 1)

This is one of the BLs about BLs that are released this year. It has quite an interesting premise: the main character realizes that he exists in a BL world and tries his darn best not to be “contaminated”—which means that he has to avoid falling in love with a man. Of course, we know where this is going: if he even has to try not to fall in love with a man, he might as well give up.

There is potential for this short series to both entertain and disappoint. The main character’s efforts to avoid falling in love with guys are funny. Sometimes his attempts cause other characters to become couples (so there’s good deal of BL even though there isn’t a focus on a particular couple throughout), and his attempt to prevent his brother from being “contaminated” are a total failure.

On the other hand, some may not fancy watching an hour and a half of the main character’s gay panic only to have a cute part at the end in which he does fall in love with a guy anyway. There is supposed to be a second season that promises further development for this relationship—I don’t know if it will eventually be made, but I think the series is one of those that will be better when you get to watch all the seasons at one go.

Less wholesome than expected...

While this show was definitely entertaining, it lacked the emotional depth I had expected from it. It was listed under BL, Romance, & Fantasy on Viki, so I was not expecting it to be primarily a comedy. That would not have been a problem, however, if any of the characters had possessed some depth of emotion or relationship development. Instead, I was as caught off guard by the ultimate conclusion of this story as the MC himself & confused by its abruptness. Maybe it's my fault. I just wanted more.

I'm... not sure this was consentual

I came here for a good love story, instead, I got something that ridiculed love stories and basically bashed gay relationships. I know it intended to bash BL, I came ready for that. I am a prodigious basher of BL (I can only watch and read it if I also recognize and vocalize its many faults and issues), but this one... it went too far. As someone who is queer, and is able to healthily bash BL, it feels very uncomfortable watching this. And it all boils down to this feeling that none of it was consensual. Like there was a higher power author playing puppet master with these men's lives ...against their will. hear me out. TMC spent 3.75 episodes not in love with anyone and very comfortable and fully in his non-BL life. Successfully fighting it with all he's got with no challenges in sight. THEN you see him confessing to a person he meets 1.5 times for a matter of seconds like a day ago, and has barely interacted with? While in his head shouting and struggling against it with all his might? Not only was it the worse love story BECAUSE IT WAS NON-EXISTENT, but it was so unbelievable he'd be in love with this stranger (who was your name?) out of thin air! And what makes it worse is this feeling that there is a higher power that is the author playing around with these men. Each of them "falls in love" instantaneously, with no pretext, no context AND there is that guy with the binoculars... and the fact that he's there in the final scene and says "you didn't escape." Ugh. But in the end, he doesn't want to fall in love, He doesn't fall in love, but all of a sudden he's confessing to someone (who is very cute by the way) protesting all the way? That doesn't seem like it's happening under his own will. And the one thing I hate most in this world is a lack of consent. Being forced into a relationship, to love, to have physical interactions with someone against your will. Nah-ah, not ok.
What's worse, is they could have made the falling in love consensual, or seem consensual. He could have actually MET the love interest. He could have slowly, obviously come to a decision that he loves the other dude and SHOWS he loves the dude for actually visible reasons or interactions, and he could have willingly, nay ENTHUSIASTICALLY come to confess his love. I came here for a good love story, instead, I got something that ridiculed love stories and basically bashed gay relationships.

The main draw for me here was Inukai Atsuhiro playing the lead, 'Mob'. Mob, as in the 'extra' in a BL manga. The character who's there but doesn't really add anything to the story. And he's just fine with it, thank you very much.

Gosh, Inukai and his facial expressions were the cherry on top of an already hilarious plot. The way he hunched over, narrowed his eyes and almost wrinkled his nose, expressing his "Pah, lovebirds!" feels, had me in stitches. I loved how he dodged his own love encounters, refusing to become a "trope victim" while "sacrificing" others for the greater good - and wishing them all the happiness in the world!

But also, Mob's relationship with his brother honestly warmed my heart. He loved Ayato and Ayato loved him, dearly so, that much was obvious. And though Ayato couldn't help but see his big brother as a bit of a nutjob - really, no wonder! - that didn't change anything. And even their parents - also eyeing Mob with suspicion - were sweet. At the center of this mad thing truly was a sweet, loving family. Which was what ultimately sold me on this drama, its solid center.

Busted my Ass Laughing

A Man Who Defies the World of BL is such a gem, I almost want to punish myself for waiting so long to watch it. It takes you out of the stereotypical way of watching a BL and dives you into the depth of specific tropes and cliches while Mob looks with disgust on his face. I didn't think I was going to enjoy this nearly as much as I did. I'm only sad I'm just now seeing it.

Let's Dive In.

The concept is what really piqued my interest. A dude is stuck in a BL world and he tries to fight off falling for any cliche tropes or the pretty men in order to continue only being the "mob" aka background character. With this, our main character avoids every little thing at any cost, and it's just by far one of the funniest BLs I've ever seen.

What I didn't like: This kiss between Ayato and Toujou burnt my soul. I would've rather they had just faded to black after their hug. Cause honestly, what the f**K was that..?

What I liked. I loved pretty much everything else. I loved Mob's voice-over, and even when we switched to hear the others narrate their story. It really added a lot more richness to the story, and just made it 10x more hilarious than it would've been without it. I loved when the attractive love interest had roses or flowers behind them and the way it was over-exaggeratingly bright. There were just so many gems to its series, it's too much to explain.

Ratings:

Story: 9.5 - A great story. Just watching Mob being a crazy person for the way he tried to avoid the men, and trying to help his brother stay out of it. Everything flowed perfectly, even the comedy part of the series never faltered, it was all great.

Acting: 8.5 - Superb acting. Some hiccups here and there, but everyone really did a fair job.

Music: 9 - You saw the title sequence too right? While it's not something I would listen to on the regular, it was hilarious and indeed increased my usual music rating.

Rewatch Value: 3 - It was really funny and I will take anything funny to always rewatch.

In the end, I highly recommend this series. I watched in parts, so it didn't feel like I was watching for very long. However, a 2-hour movie sounds a bit tough to sit through, so I'd say watch it in parts. Believe me, you will leave with your cheeks burning. This shit was hilarious.
