MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR EPISODES 1 THRU 8

Hello, my fellow MDL users. I hope you are all happy and safe. Today I will be discussing a new lakorn that was released this April and just ended a few days ago. I don’t often watch currently airing dramas, but My Husband in Law caught my eye for its somewhat confusing title. I initially thought it had something to do with in-laws, but, apparently, the correct and more comprehensive translation of the title is Heart Almost BrokenSecretly in Love with My Husband which is still a bit of a mouthful, however, it does make much more sense and is more relevant.

So I first started watching this lakorn when I saw Brownie’s posts on the feed about it. (p.s. thanks for that). Yesterday, I started on episode 1 and quickly finished 6 episodes on the same day. Each episode is about an hour and 45 minutes long, which is typical of lakorns. It’s almost like watching 12-15 episodes of a K-drama.

The summary and tags gave me strong Itazura Na Kiss vibes. I was in the mood for something like that, so I was quick to download all the episodes as soon as they were subbed. While the summary may make you think that the female lead is a typical naïve girl chasing after an arrogant guy who doesn’t give a crap about her, I can assure you it is definitely not.

Thienewat becomes involved with a woman, Yada, not knowing that she is already married. Yada’s husband discovers them doing the devil’s tango redhanded and threatens Thien’s life. Thien’s mother forces him and her friend’s daughter, Natareen Muay to get married to appease Yada’a husband and also match-make the two together.
Thien has always viewed Muay as an annoying little sister. Unbeknownst to him, Muay has loved Thien since she first laid eyes upon him. Thien and Muay make a deal to get divorced as soon as Thien is out of danger and can live his life without worrying about Yada and her husband.
They both get married, and poor Muay relentlessly does her best to make Thien happy despite his callousness. Muay leaps through obstacles at work and home with a bright smile to squeeze through the barbed wires wrapped around Thien’s heart.

Thienwat “Thien”

(Mark Prin Suparat)

Thien is a pineapple. Prickly on the outside, sweet and tart on the inside. I have to be honest; I almost gave up on him because it was so difficult to find any redeeming qualities. He’s very goal-driven and dislikes displaying any sweet emotions. Muay’s endless love for him slowly softens him and makes him appreciate her.

Natarin “Muay”

(Mew Nittha Jirayungyurn)

Sweet, smart and loyal to a fault! Muay initially reminded me of Kotoko from INK because of her blind, persistent love for Thien and happy-go-lucky nature, but later I realized she is so much more than just a cute face with a strong will. In hopes of winning Thien’s heart, Muay flirts with him through unconventional tactics such as hacking his computer and leaving flirty notes and enlisting the help of his friends and boss to reel him in and crack his iron heart.

~ the  chemistry~

If you thought the chemistry between Sathit and Jeerawat in Kleun Cheewit was amazing, you NEED to watch this lakorn. Thien and Muay give Sathit and Jeerawat a run for their money. Although it took a while for Thien to realize his feelings for Muay, the tension and heart-fluttering moments in between made it worth the wait.

~ the  female  lead~

In the beginning, I was worried that Muay was a typical Nang Ek that would ignore the male lead’s mean actions and forgive him at the first sign of regret, but I became pleasantly surprised as new episodes were released and the more I got to know her. Thien makes many mistakes with Muay at the beginning of the drama, but later it takes quite a bit of grunt work to win her back. She’s not just a doormat he can walk over. Muay protects those she loves. I like that she doesn’t waver from any decisions she makes. When she decides to chases after Thien, she does. When she decides to leave him, she tries her best to do so.

~ mean  male  lead ~

Now I don’t mind a good ol’ fashioned cold guy/warm girl romance, but jeez Thien was pretty cold towards the fl. It gave me serious Tra Barb See Chompoo PTSD. (ps that lakorn would’ve been perfect if the male lead wasn’t such a loser/jerk). Despite the similarities, I would say that Thien is 100 times better than the male lead from Tra Barb See Chompoo. He knows his limits and doesn’t push Muay too far.
Also, unlike TBSC, it was apparent how and when Thien fell in love with Muay. It's so adorable watching Thien slowly learn how to love Muay and to be considerate to her.

~ flashbacks ~

There are as many flashbacks in the middle, but they’re so gosh-darned many in the first couple episodes. It’s bearable,  but I think the story would’ve flowed better if the flashbacks and flash-forwards were timed better and there were less of them in general.

That’ll be all for this article!

I hope you enjoyed reading it and give My Husband in Law a go. :)
