Let's discuss the ending...

I loved Drive My Car, Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, and Asoka I & II and I feel like I mostly understood all of them. I even think I understand all of this movie up until the ending, but I haven't yet figured it out. I'm giving Hamaguchi the benefit of the doubt (at least for now). Can anyone help me understand this?
