I've found the novel and was able to translate it in English. I'm only 6 chapters in, but if anyone is interested in knowing some of differences I thought I'd post them here.

So far:

  • Their meeting 10 years later is completely different.  She was at a bar when a neighboring place caught fire. She recognized JSC right away and when the fire was out she bought him water and brought it to him. She greeted him by name, and LF asked if they knew each other and he said no, while she said yes. Which sparked a very interesting exchange where she didn't even tell him her name, but got him to give her his number and left him reeling because she has a photo of his old dog and wont tell him why she has it or give it back.
  • Their second meeting is the one that takes place at the search and rescue dog center, he searches her out because he wants the picture of his dog back. The guy who runs the place actually tells JSC who XL is and about her history in the earthquake and that's when he puts the pieces together. He's actually initially happy to realize it, because saving her had been a very profound memory in his life. He didn't recognize her at first because she had short hair and was dressed like a boy when she was rescued, and his brain didn't really make the connection to the beautiful woman he saw in front of him.
  • The age difference is 3 years. She was 15 and he 18, when he saved her. She was in a lot worse condition in the earthquake too. She'd been under the rubble for 2 1/2 days before they found her and nearly died of dehydration. They couldn't get her out right away so he sat in the rubble, holding her hand and talking to her to keep her awake for several hours. They just got her out in time to save her. Her mother was in the earthquake too, but died. JSC actually spent almost all his downtime with her at the time, trying to get through to her.
  • At the end of their first meeting 10 years later, she's kind of already got him spinning, by the end of the second meeting he's already aware that he might be digging himself a hole he cant get out of.  He thinks that he is not a warm person. That he is cold, proud, and arrogant....but he cant find it himself to be mean to her because of their shared history.
  • She is not a reporter, but an animal science professor at the university.  She also started the first blog about stories about rescuing dogs years ago, but stopped posting when it became a popular subject that saturated the market. She is an unknown celebrity because of this.
  • Her best friend is a woman who is a doctor. So far no Huo is in the picture.
  • JSC and LF are childhood friends who became firefighters together.

from chapters 6-12:

  • Huo and Han Fang finally made an appearance, along with a third guy friend. They all grew up tother. It does appear that Huo does have feelings for her, but their not best friends like in the show.
  • Her dad is still in the military and a Chief. He lives on base...his and XL relationship is yet to be determined, but she did not tell him she was back in China and he is angry that she refuses to live on base with him.
  • JSC and XL met a 3rd time, by accident. The scene where the guy gets in face for moving his car....except its a drunk guy just wanting to pick a fight and XL just happens to be in the stopped traffic at the scene and she gets out of the car and throws her purse at the guy trying to pick a fight. When they separate, JSC watches her watching him leave, with a smile on his face...(he  rather enjoyed watching her scream at the guy).....he's a goner. His unit only met her twice at this point and are already calling her 'sister in law' behind JSC back.
  • She is texting him every day, sometimes he responds, sometimes not.....but starts responding to all her texts after their third meeting.
  • Both of his parents are alive.
  • They sort of agree to meet for lunch, but after his mom makes him stay to meet a family friend, he tells her he can't, but asks her to dinner instead. Only XL is out with her doctor friend for lunch, and sees him with another woman, and he is bleeding. He stopped a fight or something. The woman is the daughter of the family friend that was visiting his family, and she is in love with him. XL takes him to the ER, and her and the other woman are in the waiting room while he is getting stitches. The woman tries to sow discord because she sees that JSC already has a connection with XL, and tells XL that she and JSC are childhood sweethearts (their not) but XL doesn't appear to buy it and tells the woman that her and JSC relationship is 'one of the body'. JSC comes out and makes the woman leave, but doesn't make XL leave. Which rubs the other woman the wrong way.
  • So far, in present day. She is not very clingy. They've met only four times, three times by accident and once because he sought her out. He already knows where she lives because he drove her home from the training center that one time. Really the only thing she does is text him a lot.

So overall, now that I'm finished...the major changes:

  • LF actually fell in love with a widowed professor with a child, that works with SL. Their relationship isn't off the ground...yet. At the end.
  • There is no real 3rd couple.
  • Huo is only in a handful of scenes in the book and he straight up assaults her in the book in the drunk scene when he shows up at her apartment.
  • SL is more cunning, and instead of chasing him....she is really good at getting him to chase her. She isn't clingy outside of the spammy texts.
  • Once they're in a relationship, she is the one that keeps having to remind him to maintain decorum in public, because he straight up don't care.
  • He almost died in the earthquake.
  • Never ended up in a coma.
  • they sleep together for the first time, the night he proposes....and then the next day he goes to her house while she is sleeping in his bed and packs up half her house and moves her into his apartment....while picking up the marriage application along the way....
  • he has almost 0 chill when it comes to her....and -50 chill after they sleep together....
  • At their wedding reception, she tells him she is pregnant.
  • Her Dad is the only real obstacle to them getting married because he is dead set on her marrying Huo. But JSC gets him to come around.
  • JSC ends up taking a promotion and transferring to the brigade so he will no longer be on the front line at the end. SL doesn't want him to, but he says he wants to have a more steady job for their family.
  • They never met as children, but you find out that their grandfathers were friends and used to joke about marrying their grandchildren (them) to each other. But then her grandfather died, and Grandpa Jin lost touch with her father.
  • She is not afraid of storms. But is afraid of frogs and toads. Something that JSC finds very amusing. He even tells her he sees one, once....just so she jumps into his arms.

where did you find the English translation?

 kristina:

where did you find the English translation?

I actually found it in Chinese, and used the translator in my browser. There are some sentences that translated confusingly, and their pronouns are often backwards. But I understood it.

do you still have the link?

https://www.sto.cx/book-168377-1.html

Just remember you need to use your translate function on your browser.

The story line in the book seems more interesting. Sad why they have to change the plot/story. I really think that childhood connection is so unnecessary and the clingy male friend of the FL.
